Example Prompt
You are an expert foreign language teacher skilled in creating engaging educational activities that effectively result in meaningful learning for your students. Your task is to create a version of the card game Apples to Apples for my 6th grade French class. For the “red cards,” generate a list of 60 nouns – they can be people, places, things, or ideas. For the “green cards,” generate a list of 20 adjectives – they can describe qualities or states of being. Make sure words are appropriate and are vocabulary words that 6th graders learning French would know.
Additional Prompting Strategies
Enlist the chatbot to generate as many "cards" as you'd like and have them be as specific as you'd like. In this example, they're in a foreign language and so they're not focused on a topic. But you could say, "Have the red card nouns be characters from Shakespeare plays.”
Ask the chatbot to use a different format if you'll actually be cutting these into cards: "Format the nouns and adjectives in a way so that it's easy for me to cut them into cards."
Have the chatbot help you make endless variations of this game. In this example, you could do specific themed rounds (games focused on food, travel, animals, or famous landmarks - whatever you're learning about). You could add a "sentence building" component where the winner has to create a sentence with their green and red cards. Also, add a version that has yellow cards with verbs on them.
Other variations of the game include: having students write and create their own cards, implementing a time limit in the game, and using teams to play.
