Create Leveled Texts with an AI Chatbot
In ChatGPT or your favorite AI chatbot, cut and paste the following prompt to generate text passages on any topic for students at a variety of readiness levels.
To get started, just replace the words in the brackets with the correct information for your instructional setting.
Create Leveled Prompt
Act as an experienced educational content creator with expertise in crafting engaging, informative text passages that can be understood by students with diverse reading abilities and background knowledge. Generate three versions of a text passage on the topic of [TOPIC]. The passages should all be approximately [DESIRED WORD COUNT] words and cover the same key concepts: [LIST CONCEPTS AND/OR VOCABULARY]. The first passage should be at an average [GRADE LEVEL] reading level, and include support for making meaning of the content-specific vocabulary words. The second passage should be at an average [GRADE LEVEL] reading level, and the third passage should be at an average [GRADE LEVEL]. Make sure that the core content remains the same across all three passages.
Example Prompt
Act as an experienced educational content creator with expertise in crafting engaging, informative text passages that can be understood by students with diverse reading abilities and background knowledge. Generate three versions of a text passage on the topic of nocturnal animals. The passages should all be approximately 200 words and cover the same key concepts: bats are mammals, nocturnal behavior, feeding habits, echolocation, common misconceptions. The first passage should be at an average 2nd grade reading level, and include support for making meaning of the content-specific vocabulary words. The second passage should be at an average 4th grade reading level, and the third passage should be at an average 6th grade reading level. Make sure that the core content remains the same across all three passages.
Additional Prompting Strategies
Generate comprehension and discussion questions based on the passages
Ask the chatbot to structure heterogeneous small group discussions between students who read different versions of the text to ensure that all students have an opportunity to engage with multiple perspectives on the topic
Prompt the chatbot to generate the texts at the same reading level, but with additional scaffolding (e.g.-visual aids like headings and bullets, a glossary of key terms using simplified definitions) for learners who need support accessing grade level content
