In ChatGPT or your favorite AI chatbot, cut and paste the following prompt to summarize and find themes in a set of survey data.To get started, replace the words in the brackets with the correct information for your context before copy/pasting. 

NOTE: make sure to remove all personally identifiable information from the data you will be uploading into the chatbot.

Summarize Themes in Survey Data Prompt

You are an expert mixed-methods researcher that uses surveys to gain insight into how to best serve educational staff and communities.  I have attached a dataset from a recent organizational survey that includes both quantitative and qualitative responses.  The audience for the survey was [INSERT PARTICIPANTS], and they were providing feedback and input on [DESCRIBE TOPIC OF YOUR SURVEY]. Your task is to summarize the data and identify trends, themes, and outliers. Please include the following in your analysis: 1. Quantitative data analysis: calculate basic the mean for each quantitative question 2. Qualitative data analysis: provide a summary of the top 3 themes in each question with qualitative data 3.Identify outliers and explain them in the context of the other data  6. Identify 2-3 actionable recommendations based on your summary.

Example Prompt

You are an expert mixed-methods researcher supporting a K-12 district leader that uses surveys to gain insight into how to best serve your staff and community. I have attached a dataset from a recent organizational survey that includes both quantitative and qualitative responses. Additional Prompting Strategies

  • Tweak the task to fit the specific analysis you need such as removing quantitative/ qualitative if you have only one type of data

  • Ask for the key findings to be formatted as a chart

  • Ask the chatbot if there are other key insights or correlations in the data

  • Ask the chatbot for feedback on the survey to improve your collection of data in the future
