Design Mindfulness Practices Using an AI Chatbot
In ChatGPT or your favorite AI chatbot, cut and paste the following prompt to build your toolbox of mindfulness practices to help students manage stress and improve focus. This strategy can enhance your explicit teaching of self-management and emotional regulation. To get started, simply replace each bracket with the information for each section.
Mindfulness Practices Prompt
You are an expert educator and social emotional learning instructional designer with expertise in mindfulness practices and in the CASEL framework. Your task is to provide [NUMBER] examples of mindfulness strategies to help my [GRADE LEVEL] students cope with stress and anxiety. The practices should be clearly defined, include an explanation of how the practice can help and ways to adapt the practice for students’ [SPECIFIC NEEDS].
Example Prompt
You are an expert educator and social emotional learning instructional designer with expertise in mindfulness practices and in the CASEL framework. Your task is to provide 3 examples of mindfulness strategies to help my 3rd grade students cope with stress and anxiety. The practices should be clearly defined, include an explanation of how the practice can help and ways to adapt the practice for students that have difficulty connecting with their own emotions.
Additional Prompting Strategies
Have the chatbot adapt the strategies for a specific student. For example, if you have a student who has experienced the loss of a loved one, you can ask GPT to provide a trauma-informed strategy to help that specific child.
Ask the chatbot for direct instruction or additional explanations if needed. For example, if one of the strategies suggested is to lead students through a guided visualization exercise, ask the chatbot to create a script for a one-minute guided meditation for your class.
Have the chatbot elaborate on ideas or create visual aids to accompany activities. For example, if you have generated a guided meditation script and would like a visual aid, ask a capable AI bot (like Bing, Dall-E 3, Midjourney, or GPT-4) to generate an image to go with the script.
If you’d like ideas for more hands-on activities, elaborate on the prompt by asking something like “Are there any strategies that would be easy to do and helpful for my students that would utilize basic classroom materials?” You can even name specific materials that you have on hand to ensure the suggestion will work in your environment.
