How Do Parents Feel About GenAI?

Last Friday we hosted our first GenAI workshop for caregivers at Lexington High School in Massachusetts. It was an amazing experience that emphasized the importance of engaging caregivers in the conversation about AI in education. Here's what we learned:

🗣 Caregivers Matter:

It might seem obvious, but caregivers are crucial voices in shaping how GenAI tools are used in schools. Unfortunately, we do not see enough focus on bringing their voices into the conversation in schools/districts. Bringing them into the conversation early garners their support while deepening their understanding, which is vital for the successful, ethical integration of these technologies into any school community.

💡 Insightful Discussions & Questions:

The workshop sparked great discussions with parents asking insightful questions about GenAI's impact on education and their children's future. Check out the two word clouds that vividly illustrated their hopes and concerns pictured below. We also accidentally reversed the order, so you can check out the correct image in the comments.

🔎 What Caregivers Want:

It was clear that caregivers are seeking guidance on how GenAI is reshaping education. They want to ensure their children are equipped to use these tools responsibly and are keen to understand how GenAI will affect their children's current experiences and future opportunities.

⭐  How we set up the day:

First we started with a 90-minute introductory GenAI session with teachers and school leaders to build their AI literacy.

Then we led a Parent Council session sponsored by the PTA/PTO, featuring:

- A 20-minute keynote
- A panel with educators and students discussing how GenAi is changing school, along with its challenges and opportunities
- An interactive Q&A with parents

We know that the successful adoption of AI in education hinges on the collective effort of the entire school community and it's essential that school leaders, educators, students, and caregivers all come together.

By bringing together their unique perspectives and insights, we can ensure the most effective and equitable use of AI in learning environments.
