Create Summative Performance Tasks Using an AI Chatbot

In ChatGPT or your favorite AI chatbot, cut and paste the following prompt to help you create summative performance tasks for your students. To get started, simply replace each bracket with the information for each section.

Example Prompt

Generate 10 creative summative performance tasks, that are an alternative to a standard test, for my 3rd grade science class learning about clouds. These tasks should be engaging, applicable, appropriate, and contribute positively to learning outcomes. The tasks should ensure my students are exhibiting and applying their understanding and skills of types of clouds, how clouds are formed in the atmosphere, and the role clouds play in determining the weather.

Make the Prompt Work for You

• Ask the chatbot to adjust the performance task ideas so that they fit the needs of your class. You can ask the chatbot to make the responses more relatable to your student demographic, or more/less challenging, or ask to have the tasks be activities done in pairs.

• Use the chatbot to focus on a specific type of summative performance task if you already have an idea in mind. For example, if you'd like your class to do an art project, ask the chatbot to make all of the task options include an art component.

• Enlist the chatbot to help you make a pre-assessment, or to give you steps to scaffold your students and make sure they're best prepared for the summative performance task.

• Provide the chatbot as much detail as possible including a unit plan or overview that the summative assessment performance task is based on. Or provide an existing performance task you’d like it to use as an exemplar for the chatbot to use when structuring its reponses.
