Introduction to AI for Students

Lesson 2: Mind of a Machine

Lesson Overview

  • Length: 90 mins

  • Grade: 7-9 and 10-12 versions

  • Subject: English (ELA), Computer Science (ICT), Humanities

In this lesson, students explore what generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is, and how it is trained to respond to human prompts. Students then use the game ‘Celebrity Heads’ to compare ChatGPT, a Generative AI (GenAI) Chatbot, to human intelligence.

Students then synthesize their learning by evaluating what ChatGPT’s performance in Celebrity Heads tells us about the strengths and limitations of GenAI today.

Digital & Print Learning Packet includes:

  • Detailed Lesson Plan with Activities

  • Digital Resources & Exemplars

  • Print Work Pack

  • US/UK/AUS/ISTE Standards Alignment

  • Parent Permission Note

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Understand the process of text and image generation by large language models (LLMs)

  • Create a visual model depicting the workings of an LLM

  • Engage in a discussion on the nature of AI models: "thinking" versus "computing”

  • Compare human-brain processes with those of LLMs

  • Utilize AI image generation to create and annotate a visual model of LLM AI

  • Facilitate a presentation and discussion on the processes involved in AI image generation

What’s Next

This is the second in a 4-lesson sequence introducing middle and high school students to the power, potential and risks of generative AI with a focus on ChatGPT.

Upcoming lessons explore how large language models are trained and generate answers, the risks of AI hallucination and bias and co-create a student AI policy.

Lesson 3: Hallucination Detective

Lesson 4: Co-Creating an AI School Policy
