ChatGPT Usage Varies Widely by Job and Gender

A recent study by researchers at the Universities of Chicago and Copenhagen reveals some fascinating insights about ChatGPT adoption across various professions, including a considerable gender gap in adoption.

Highlights:

• Overall, half of the workers in exposed occupations have used ChatGPT, with adoption rates varying from 79% for software developers to 34% for financial advisors.

• Younger and less experienced workers are more likely to use ChatGPT.

• Restrictions on use and the need for training are the main barriers to adoption reported, rather than fears about job redundancy or technology dependence.

• Women are 20 percentage points less likely to use ChatGPT compared to men in the same occupation, and even among coworkers within the same workplace. Nearly half of women cite the need for training, the chief reason reported as preventing them from using ChatGPT.

Education-specific findings:

• Teachers have one of the lower adoption rates among the surveyed occupations.

•  For teachers, ChatGPT is considered to have large time-saving potential in tasks like adapting teaching methods and materials, and preparing course objectives and outlines.

• However, ChatGPT is seen as less useful for tasks requiring human interaction, such as encouraging students to explore learning opportunities or establishing classroom rules.

• Also follow general gender divide, with male teachers 60% more likely to use AI at work

Proactive approaches by organizations could help address the gender gap and democratize access to this powerful AI tool, and a reason we are dedicated to providing AI literacy training to 1 million educators.
