Generative AI Critical Analysis Activities

The ability to critically evaluate the quality of Gen AI outputs is a crucial AI literacy skill. The following activities can help educators and students develop their abilities to analyze, evaluate, and improve text created by an AI.

 
 

More and more teachers are reaching out to ask us about strategies for building AI literacy. We've developed a new resource with suggestions for activities that involve critical analysis and evaluation of AI outputs. It empowers both educators and students to think analytically about AI outputs and emphasizes the importance of human insight and oversight in the AI era.

These activities are designed to be versatile - they can be used with students in the classroom, or by teachers themselves for individual professional development or in group PD sessions.

This is how we would approach implementing these activities:

For students:

They can be conducted as standalone activities or integrated into existing curricula to teach critical thinking, writing, and subject-specific skills for any content area while building AI literacy.

For teachers:

We know that teachers are concerned about academic integrity and may be turning to unreliable AI detection tools. So these activities provide teachers an opportunity to evaluate outputs and start to see why our teacher intuition is often not enough to spot AI generated work.

Activities

  1. Input an assignment into a chatbot and request two or more responses; compare the outputs line-by-line and discuss which is the strongest/weakest based on a rubric.

  2. Input an assignment into a chatbot and then grade the output using the assignment’s rubric.

  3. Examine two versions of a text: one AI-generated and one written by a human. Compare the voice of each text, identifying uniquely human patterns of expression.

  4. Use an AI-generated text passage related to your content area and then fact-check it using reliable sources.

  5. Start with an AI-generated draft and find ways to improve it, focusing on areas currently under study in your class.

Follow up all activities by explaining your thinking orally or in writing. What do your thoughts suggest about the overall quality of AI outputs? What are the implications for AI’s role in other work for the course?
