SEE Framework in Action

Our Frameworks in Action resource models how students and educators can use guiding questions to navigate real dilemmas involving generative AI. Rather than offering universal right answers, it provides a process for exercising judgment by considering what is Safe, Ethical, and Effective.

The resource is drawn from examples included in AI for Education’s SEE Framework for GenAI Literacy, the first practical framework designed to support thoughtful decision-making about generative AI in education.

The five example Frameworks in Action in the SEE Framework model how Safe, Ethical, and Effective questions can help guide decisions about generative AI in education. This companion resource invites you to do the same.

Use the template below to apply the SEE lenses to a dilemma, decision, or opportunity from your own context. Whether you are thinking through classroom use, assessment, student guidance, policy implementation, or professional practice, the goal is to surface the questions that matter before making a decision.

Like the examples in the SEE Framework, begin with a scenario and work through each lens:

  • Safe — What risks, protections, permissions, or safeguards need consideration?

  • Ethical — What questions of responsibility, fairness, transparency, or human judgment arise?

  • Effective — Does GenAI meaningfully support learning or practice here, and how will you know?

Then bring all three lenses together to arrive at a Safe + Ethical + Effective decision.

Use this template individually, with colleagues or students, or as part of professional learning discussions.

There may not be one correct answer, but there should be thoughtful questions.

Begin with a real dilemma, decision, or opportunity involving GenAI.

This could involve:

  • Student use of AI for learning

  • Using GenAI to draft parent newsletters

  • Classroom or assessment design

  • Evaluating new GenAI tools

  • Using GenAI to create supplemental lessons for an existing curriculum

  • School or district implementation questions

  • Deciding whether to pilot an AI grading tool

  • Or check out some examples below!

Then work through each lens.

Example Frameworks:

Try it out: Framework in Action

Role: Who is navigating this scenario?

Scenario: Describe the dilemma, decision, or opportunity you are considering.

SAFE

What questions should I ask about risks, protections, permissions, or safeguards?

ETHICAL

What questions should I ask about responsibility, fairness, transparency, or human judgment?

EFFECTIVE

What questions should I ask about whether GenAI meaningfully supports learning or practice?

Safe + Ethical + Effective

After considering all three lenses, what decision or response am I arriving at?

Reflection

What did these questions help me notice, reconsider, or refine?

Discuss or Revisit

  • What additional questions might a colleague raise?

  • Would your response change in another context?

  • What would you revise after trying this in practice?
